Sri Lanka Army (SLA) shelling has killed and maimed increasing number of pregnant mothers during the last 3 weeks in Vanni. On 27 March, a 30-year-old mother, Sivakumar Poomalar, was brought to the makeshift hospital at Puthumaaththa'lan with injuries. Doctors said they carried out emergency cesarean laprotomy, but were unable to save the child, which was found with head injuries. The doctors had to remove the uterus (womb) of the mother in her second pregnancy. Her first child, 7-year-old Kayaththri was also injured in the SLA shelling.
The doctors struggled to save the life of the baby, but the baby didn't breathe properly and succumbed to head injuries. [Source:TamilNet]
