Global Terrorism Index 2014

Global Terrorism Index says that almost 10,000 terrorist attacks occurred in 2013 and the fatalities recorded were almost 18,000 deaths. It seems that Iraq was most vulnerable to the violence attacks with 2,492 case recorded while more than 6,000 people killed.

The same survey also shows that Malaysia is experiencing a growing impact of terrorism within its shores. Malaysia’s rank for 2014 was placed at 48 out of 162 countries. While Malaysians have experienced political extremism but it’s rare to hear about the real terrorism, except for the few, such as “Memali” and “Sauk” tragedy.

However, the latest terrorism index raises my eyebrow. We shall not water down this index in a single statement. The threat from the extremist is real and they are using the religion to influence the moderates to follow the terrorists’ path.

Counter terrorism is not an easy policy to be implemented. It may take years to succeed or may fail, but the security agencies shall never give up. While the information on terrorism should made available to the public, the covert operations shall continue to detect those who are working behind the scene to spread the terrorist ideology.#
