Will Al-Qaeda make a Come back?

Interesting to know that the United States on 12 June 2017 had made a decision to proscribed Majelis Mujahidin Indonesia (MMI). Open source reported that the Intelligence finding shows that the MMI was an ‘Indonesian-based terrorist group formed by Abu Bakar Bashir’The question is why now after 17 years?

I am of the view that Daesh had reached their highest plot and now on their way, to exit to be part of history. It is unlikely another new terrorist group to emerge to fill the vacuum left by Daesh. However, most likely the existing proscribed group such as Al-Qaeda may re-emerge in the absent of Daesh.

So why MMI... the US have strong justification that MMI will be the most strongest affiliated group representing Al-Qaeda in Southeast Asia. It seems that MMI has close links with Jabhat al-Nusra apart from strong connection with JI.

According to Intelligence source, significant number of MMI followers had migrated to Syria and Iraq to be part of Jabhat al-Nusra's soldiers against Daesh and the Assad regime.

Thus, the US have taken advance decision to contain MMI as its followers are going back to Southeast Asia after the end of war in Iraq. And in this latest round of war against terrorism, Al-Qaeda and its affiliated members in Southeast Asia will re-emerge as the strongest proscribe group. The next war might be in Southeast Asia.
